Ron Massey Red-hot Round 1 over Western Sydney Magpies

The Hawks have piled on the meat pies today at home (TG Milner) with a win over the Western Sydney Magpies.

The Hawks got off to a dream start, with a short left edge pass onto Second Rower Matthew Ryan to cross over for the first 4 points.

The left edge seemed unstoppable with Fullback Bradley Cousins stepping on the inside of Captain Mitchell Gray to receive a pop pass to cross for the Hawks second try to add 4 points. A continual two-minute left edge punishment propelled the Hawks a further 8 points before half time.

Second half saw the Magpies came out capitalising the ruck to force the Hawks to make a mistake which lead them to their first points of the game.

A few Magpie handling mistakes gave the Hawks an opportunity to run riot with Captain Mitchell Gray crossing for his second try followed by Mason Ward scoring a personal double and Jamin Williams finishing the game to end the Hawks on 38-6 victory.

Captain, Mitchell Gray crossing for his second try.

It’s been an unusual journey for North Sydney Bears player Regan Hughes, who was playing country Rugby League 300km away before now finding himself on the cusp of a dream NRL debut.

While dividing his time between playing Rugby Union for Charles Sturt University and Rugby League for Canowindra Tigers in 2019, Hughes received a phone call from Wests Tigers Recruitment Manager Warren McDonell who wanted him to come to Sydney for a trial game.

In 2021, Hughes found his way into the Hawks’ Ron Massey Cup side where according to coach Jarred Farlow, he proved himself as the type of player you want to play alongside.

“He’s a good kid; a fiery red head who plays with aggression but he’s in control,” Farlow told nswrl.com.au.

The NSW Government last month extended the lockdown for the Greater Sydney Region, including Sydney, Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Wollongong and Shellharbour, to try and combat the rising COVID-19 outbreak.

“With the current Public Health Order in force until at least 28 August, and there understandably being no current NSW Government sanctioned roadmap out of the lockdown for sport, the Board was left with little option but to cancel our Major Competitions,” NSWRL Chief Executive David Trodden said.
